A New Start With New Lives

Mission: The Nanjing
Location: Medical Complex
Timeline: MD 4 || 0800 Hours

"Breathe, Mrs. Aravan, breathe," William Fontaine urged the Commodore's wife as they got her into the medical room that the Nanjing known as Dant showed them. He scanned her with his tricorder. "Just a few more centimeters and you'll be ready."

Michael stood by his wife's side holding one of her hands. "Just remember the first two," he said. "It'll be nice and easy."

Spencer looked at William, then to Michael. Was it just her, or did they seem more nervous and anxious than she was? Maybe they both needed a distraction, and the expectant mother knew what would work. "Has anyone heard anything about Maddy, Tom and the others?"

"They're being cared for by the Nanjing and the Victorious is taking those too serious directly to Deep Space 11," Michael said, worry in his voice.

She reached out to take his hand into hers and tried to give him a reassuring smile. "They're going to be okay," she said. "We just have to have faith."

"This is going to be the end of things as we know them," he said. "But a new beginning comes from every ending."

"Now's not really the time to focus on that kind of stuff. We can worry about it later," Spencer said, shifting around a bit when a new wave of pain moved through her lower abdomen. She'd given birth twice before, but this was a little different considering there were two babies.

Willie checked the tricorder again. "It won't be long now, Mrs. Aravan," he said. "Everything looks perfect."

Spencer looked toward William and offered him a smile. "I'll be able to tell. Trust me, medication or not, the pressure will surely let me know."

"Right you are, Mrs. Aravan," Willie said before he looked at Dani. "Do we have everything we need here or should I run back to the Victorious?"

Michael ooked at his wife. "Do you want anything to drink, honey?"

Dani, who'd only entered the room a short time ago, nodded her head. "We're good to go here, but I think we should allow our expectant parents the opportunity to spend a little time together before their family grows by two."

Spencer looks to William and Dani, offering them both a smile. "Thank you both for what you're doing. I know there are other places you'd rather be right now. Like with your own little guy."

"Nonsense," Dani said, checking one of the monitors. "We're where we need to be at the moment. We'll be with our son as soon as we're able to be."

"Come on, sweetie," Willie said as he took Dani's hand. "We can come back in a few."

Dani smiled and made her way out with William.

Michael looked at Spencer after the two Medical personnel left. "You're calmer now than before."

"Which before? Before we ended up here, or our other two kids?" She asked. "If you mean when we were trying to get away from the crew that was trying to kill us, I wouldn't say I was freaking out. I just wanted everyone to get somewhere we could all be safe."

"Before our other two kids," he amended. "You did great on getting us away from the crew and I'm proud of you."

"Well, I would be nervous with Ava and Little Mikey," she said, leaning back in her bed. "She was our first, and I had no idea what to expect. With him, I knew what to expect, but was medically retired. That was definitely scary. This time seems like a walk in the park now that no one is trying to kill us."

That we know of Michael thought and wondered if the Nanjing were on the level about having defeated the corrupted ones and stayed out of everyone else. "This time it's too, and we only have two medical personnel here to help."

Spencer gave his hand a squeeze. "Could be worse. It could be just the two of us. At least we have the help of medical personnel, which I'm extremely grateful for."

"This is true and I am, too," he said, but he was clearly worried. "Let's just focus on the here and now."

"That's my current plan. Though, my contractions don't really leave me much room to truly focus on much else," she said with smile. "What do you think these two babies will be? Boys? Girls? One of each? I have no regrets about not finding out ahead of time."

"Maybe one of each so Mikey and Ava can both have a little brother and sister," he said.

Spencer placed her hands on her large abdomen and gave it a pat. "And they'd both be happy. We'll know soon enough."

Michael picked up the tricorder that Fontaine had left. "I could tell you now."

"Absolutely not. That takes away from the surprise. If you want to look for yourself, I don't mind, but I don't want to know."

He set it down again. "I've waited this long. A little while longer won't hurt me. I just want them to be healthy."

"That's all I want. Healthy babies, and to come out of this healthy myself. I know William and Dani will do everything they can to make sure that happens."

"I hope they'll be enough, but Dant has offered us all the medical technology left behind here by the Bajorans as well, and they're Federation," Michael said as he took her hand and kissed it.

Spencer smiled at her husband. "Everything is going to be okay. Some way, some how. We just have to be as positive as we can be. I do want to see Maddy, and the others, at some point, though. As soon as she's able to."

"Maddy..." he trailed off, remembering how his Executive Officer looked as well as Chief Barnes. He wished he could be there with his crew, but his wife took priority. "We will." Though he wasn't certain how he'd be received.

She leaned over to press a kiss to his cheek. "It's all going to be okay."

Michael attempted a smile, but knew things were going to be grim for the infected crew. "I'm going to try to ask Dant to intercede on their behalf if he's able to."

"I'm sure Dant will. He's been quite helpful through everything, and I just can't see him stopping now," she said. "Just try to think positive."

"I am," he said and gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "Do you feel any closer?"

She smiled. He seemed to be a lot more anxious than she was, but that was okay. "It's not going to be too much longer," Spencer assured him. "The pressure is getting a bit more intense."

"Want me to call Fontaine and Blake back in?" Michael asked.

"I think that might not be such a bad idea. Our little family is about to grow by two in just a little while."

He tapped his combadge and called the two officers back in.

Willie came in first and gave a smile. "Are you about ready?"

Dani followed William in and began checking the biomonitor above Spencer's bed. She remembered being in the former Commander's position not very long ago herself, but it was a bit scarier since she was alone. Looking back, she would do things so much differently.

Spencer nodded her head. "Yes, I think so."

"Would you like an epidural?" William asked as he began to double check the Bajoran medical tools and medications. A part of him wondered if any of the Nanjing were still around or if they had already gotten into everyone and were preparing for another attempt at using them all as hosts.

It was clear to Spencer that William was nervous. She wasn't sure if he'd ever delivered a baby, or even been present while one was being born before. Much less two. "William, I had one already. You're nervous, aren't you?"

Dani moved back around the front of the bed to do the necessary checks to Spencer. William would definitely be okay. She would make sure of it.

"I'm sorry, Missus A," Willie said and meant it. "Just a bit of stress over the situation. Are you ready to be a mommy again?"

"Try to relax. This will be a walk in the park compared to running from people trying to kill us. However, those very people will be back to normal soon," Spencer assured him. "As for becoming a Mommy again, I can't wait. I'm looking forward to completing our family."

A short while later, Michael sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the little boy and girl in his wife's arms. "They're beautiful," he said softly and with pride. "Just like their mother."

Spencer looked from the babies to her husband with a smile. "You're so sweet, and I love you."

"I love you, too," he said. "We need names for them..." With all that had been going on and mission after mission, very little had been decided on.

She suddenly looked horrified. Their babies didn't have names, and they'd never even discussed possibilities before now. This was not a situation she ever hoped to be in. "I... Michael... how could we have never talked about names before now? I mean... I know we didn't know if they would be boys or girls, but we didn't even try."

"What about Michelle and Alexander?" Michael asked, giving the middle names of her parents.

Spencer wanted to say yes, but she wasn't sure. "I... I don't know."

"What about Elise and Edward?"

She shook her head. "I'm not fond of those. We have a a little time to talk it over and make a decision. Our babies will have to be Baby Boy Aravan and Baby Girl Aravan until we can find a couple names we both like."

"I don't like it, but it'll do," Michael said.

"I don't particularly like it, either, but I can't just settle on any name. They're going to have them for the rest of their lives, and I want them to mean something."

"We will," he said as he leaned down to kiss her. "It'll be a new start with new lives."
